The data
Everything here is derived from NBA play-by-play, 1996–97 through 2025–26: 37,984 games and about 18.3 million recorded events. Earlier seasons are covered by box score data only, which limits what can be reconstructed for them.
True shot attempts
A true shot attempt is every field-goal attempt plus every trip to the free-throw line that is not an and-one. Points divided by true shot attempts is a true-shooting rate with an exact trip count, replacing the0.44 × FTA estimate in conventional TS%.
The estimate is close on average and least accurate exactly where it matters most — for players who draw a lot of contact, and in the playoffs, where free-throw rates shift.
How the tools work
Each tool states the sample it rests on, on the page. Every chart has a table behind it showing the same numbers. Where a rate is unstable at low volume, the tool says so and names the threshold rather than hiding the row.
Above and below a baseline is shown cold-to-hot, never red-versus-green: a number below average is not a moral failing, and the palette should not imply one.
